The Big Island Writers’ Workshops
Back Story
Since I began this workshop in Hawai'i, in 2012, roughly six hundred women, and a few dozen men, have formed beautiful circles of writers who gather (in person) to spend the day connecting to their authentic writing voice. There are groups on The Big Island of Hawai'i in Waimea, Hilo, Kona and Volcano; on the mainland in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Palo Alto, and Carmel, CA; Portland, OR; Seattle, WA; New York City, NY; Boston & Winthrop, MA; and in Vancouver, Canada. Future workshops are being planned in other cities across the U.S. and abroad.
What to Expect
In my workshops you write on your own using prompts that I give you, and then we come together to share our stories and speak back each other’s words. Witnessing the birth of these stories has been a profoundly moving experience for me, and I continue to marvel at the words that are written and shared in these workshops.
This is not a technical how-to writing workshop, and there’s no critique of the work; we write to connect to our stories and share them with other writers. A good number of the writers are published authors, others are writers who journal and/or blog, and then there are writers who have the desire to write but have not yet found an outlet. I’m thrilled to also report that books, published essays, and one-woman shows / performance pieces have come out of these workshops.
We write by hand, using a notebook or a journal; we do not use computers. (Exceptions to this are if a writer has a physical issue that prevents them from writing by hand.)
Details
Each in-person workshop is limited to ten writers. For the mainland workshops, we gather at 10:00am and write until 6:30pm each day. A light breakfast and a full lunch are included each day. You have the option of writing for one day or two, and in some cases three. The Hawai’i workshops are all one-day workshops, also from 10:00am to 6:30pm. Lunch is served. (Contact me here to reserve a spot and/or pricing info.)
Payments are made via PayPal or Venmo unless other arrangements are made, and I'll send you an invoice. Payment holds the spot.
I look forward to being able to gather in person again soon!
